Description:
Thai textiles, probably the best-known example of its indigenous handicrafts, form only part of the rich assortment of creative traditions and products presented in Arts and Crafts of Thailand. Here, portrayed in spectacular colour, are baskets, earthenware, shimmering silk fabrics, as well as fine silverware, laquerware, jewelry, furniture, wood carvings, altar tables. From the most basic traditions of village life and objects of everyday use in food preparation and storage, weaving, hunting and fishing, to aristocratic tradition, change has come only in recent years as Thai society turns gradually towards Western styles of living. Ceremonial life involves both the palaces and the temples, and includes all the regalia produced for special occasions and rituals. Also remarkably strong is the tradition of theatre arts, with its masks, puppets, dance costumes and musical instruments.
