In poignant, tough, heart-catching episodes, Rattawut Lapcharoensap takes his readers beneath the surface of Thailand to a place that is dynamic and corrupt, full of pride and passion and fear. "Raw and tangy stories set in Thailand exploring, with comic poignancy, how the small country is absorbing waves of Westernization." Publishers Weekly |
Thai Vignettes by Steve Rosse
![]() Phuket and Beyond A collection of short stories by Phuket's best known expat author, Steve Rosse. These stories were first published in the Phuket Magazine, The Nation, Thailand Tattler and the Phuket Gazette. "Steve Rosse has taken one small part of Thailand - Phuket and its environs - and made it his own. What he tells us about its current life styles is not always, or even often, what tourism boosters would like to hear; but his stories have the rare ring of truth and some of them have the added bonus of being very funny." William Warren, author of Jim Thompson, the Unsolved Mystery "Every Sunday morning, Steve Rosse's "The Rock" column is the first thing I turn to in The Nation. His new Thai Vignettes, Phuket and Beyond offers the cream of his weekly tales: poignant, ironic, heartbreakingly sad, savagely funny. Steve Rosse is the conscience of Phuket, and its Jonathan Swift too." James Eckardt, author of Waylaid by the Bimbos, Boat People and Swimming with the Sharks |

Vapour Trails by Tarmo Rajasaari
![]() Short Stories set in North-East Thailand These fifteen short stories reflect various facets of life and memorable characters that populate Thailand's rustic north-east region of Isaan - a land where existence is defined by hardship and toil. In Isaan, virtually untouched by the modernization that has swept over the rest of the country in recent years, the author describes the charm and sincerity - and also the eccentricities - of the inhabitants in a way that clearly reveals his own affection for the people among whom he lived. |

Behind the Painting and Other Stories By Siburapha 1954, translated by David Smyth
![]() Behind the Painting is the story of Nopphon, a Thai student studying in Japan, who becomes infatuated with the lovely Mom Rachawong Kirati, an older Thai woman visiting the country with her husband. Their intimacy grows, and by the time the older couple returns to Thailand, Nopphon can barely contain his feelings for her. The novel reflects postwar Thai society in the vanity of the aristocracy and the pragmatism of the new elite; in the social more of concealing one's true feelings; and in the restricted existence of unmarried women and the resulting pressure to marry, whatever the circumstances. Paralleling these Thai cultural themes are the universal themes of the fear of aging and the vagaries of love. From the introduction by the translator, David Smyth - "Behind the Painting is widely regarded as one of the best-written novels in the Thai language. ... it has been reprinted on almost forty occasions, with the total number of copies printed over the years being close to one hundred thousand." |
Gulfs of Thailand by Michael Smithies
![]() A follow-up to Smithies 1993 collection of short stories, Bight of Bangkok, the stories in this collection are based on factual accounts and incidents either reported in local newspapers or recounted directly to the author. Using these real-life stories as a point of departure, Smithies creates a series of imaginative elaborations rooted in fact that explore motive and character. While the stories reflect a society in the midst of cultural transition and growing income disparity, they are meant to entertain rather than instruct. This humorous collection portrays the tolerance and patience, warmth and dignity that are fundamental to the Thai character. |
Tales of Thailand by Pira Sudham
![]() A collection of short stories, most from his first collection, Siamese Drama, published in 1983 plus two new stories. The stories deal with modern rural life in Thailand and the changes and problems occurring there. From the story "The Gunman" - I knew from a newspaper that he was a teacher, and that morning when I shot him, he was on his way from his house to lead a protest against the leasing of a rain forest from the Department of Forestry by the wife of a powerful and wealthy politician. But I did not know for sure who wanted him dead. A hired gunman is not hired directly by the people who want their enemies killed; |
People of Esarn by Pira Sudham
![]() Short stories and essays on some of the major issues facing Thailand; child prostitution, the rape of the forests, the killing of rural activists and dying rivers and soil in the North-East. From the story "A Thai Woman in Germany" - I remember you. It was in Pattaya in 1977, when you saw me for the first time at the Holiday Inn where you used to work as a manger. Maybe you wouldn't recall that it was me whom you stopped in front of the lift one night when were on duty. You tried to prevent me from going up to the room with a farang, asking him to register me first before he could take me to his room. You tried to explain to him so politely that it was a hotel regulation for the security of guests. And for such a registration, you asked him to pay 350 Baht extra. I remember also that all that while, you pretended you did not care who I was. You ignored me quite completely, but I could guess what you were thinking: "The farang is taking this whore up to his room. Boy, doesn't she look it. When you have seen one, you have seen them them all in Pattaya." |
