Palaces of Bangkok by Naengnoi Suksri
 When King Rama I ascended the throne in 1782 as the first king of the present Chakri dynasty, he decided to establish a new capital in Bangkok which would recreate the glory of the vanquished Ayutthya. At its centre was the Grand Palace covering an area of some 61 acres. In addition, some 100 other palaces were constructed in and around Bangkok for the kings and their queens, consorts and children. Initially built in traditional Thai style in wood, masonry buildings gradually developed in a variety of architectural styles, Thai, Chinese and Western, or often an eclectic amalgam of all three. Professor Emeritus Naengnoi Suksri of Chulalongkorn University has made a study of these palaces her life's work. Her authoritative text is accompanied by the superlative photography of Michael Freeman. |

King Chulalongkorn Journey to India 1872
The Diary of Colonel Sladen In 1872 King Chulalongkorn, who had been ruling for four years, made only his second trip abroad – to India. The British official responsible for receiving him and overseeing his trip was Colonel Sladen and it is the diary of his trip, the original of which is housed in the British Library, that is printed here, together with a report from the Thai side and period photographs never published before. The account gives a fascinating portrait of King Chulalongkorn aged 19, his interests and also of the sites visited such as Rangoon, Calcutta, Delhi and Bombay. |

Making use of much hitherto unpublished archive material such as letters, diaries and photographs, the book gives a fascinating insight into life in both pre-revolutionary Russia and the Siamese court. |
