The Buddhist Murals of Pagan by Claudine Bautze-Picron
![]() The Hidden Treasures of Pagan Treasures hide in the temples of Pagan—treasures in part never meant to be seen, enshrouded in the darkness of high vaults. They compose a unique ensemble in the Buddhist world of the eleventh to fourteenth century, giving us a glimpse of a lost splendour, and providing evidence of the major political, religious and artistic position that Pagan then held. Adorning the walls and ceilings of those monuments, they constitute a prayer to the Buddha: to the Buddha as a human being, to his last life, but also to his numerous lives when he was in search of the truth. This comprehensive study covers, for the first time, not only the murals found within temples near the historic city of Pagan, but also those within the monuments scattered elsewhere over the Pagan plain. Following an initial iconographic analysis, the author proceeds to reconstruct the overall vision of the murals within the broader context of the interior spaces of the temples, revealing these monuments as visualizations of the Buddhist cosmos and reflecting the cosmological nature of the Buddha. Author Bautze-Picron is an authority on early Indic Buddhist art and her erudite descriptions of these lost treasures are complemented by a magnificent photographic record of the surviving murals themselves. Essential reading for all with interest in the history and diversity of Buddhist art. |

Temples of Gold by Santi Leksukhum and Gilles Mermet
![]() Seven Centuries of Thai Buddhist Paintings The exuberant wall paintings found in the Buddhist temples of Thailand enchant the eye and spirit with their subtle colour, lyrical line, and vivid depiction of mythological and secular scenes inspired by ancient texts. These little-known masterpieces, reproduced here in exquisite detail, speak to us across the centuries with joy, humor and grace. Santi Leksukhum’s text traces the complex history of these paintings. It examines the development of their distinctive style, from the arrival of Buddhism, to the overwhelming influence of the royal workshops of Bangkok and the incorporation of Western techniques as Thailand opened to the West in the mid-nineteenth century. The renowned French photographer Gilles Mermet made several expeditions to Thailand to photograph these magnificent murals especially for this volume. An appendix recounts the major Buddhist texts, including the Three Worlds, the Ten Great Jatakas, or birth tales, and the Life of the Historical Buddha. The book will fascinate art lovers, students of Buddhism, cultural historians, armchair travelers, and all who want to enter the enchanted world of a rarely seen civilization. |
Introduction to the Thai Mural by K.I. Matics

Dr. Matics' study guides the reader through the complexities of Thai artistry, providing vivid descriptions of styles, techniques, origins, themes and mediums. Regrettably, many of the murals depicted are no longer in existence: hence, this book is a valuable historical record of Thai murals. |
